iOS 15: Add an alternate Fingerprint/ Face ID
Share:

When Apple released its iPhone X with Face ID, it came with an issue that could only be resolved with one face.

That means that if you needed an additional person to access your phone (like an important person in the event of an emergency) or if you are a bit different, wearing glasses, sunglasses, a hat, or even a face mask, you could encounter issues in unlocking your most secure iPhone and iPad using Face ID.

It's good news that Apple introduced the possibility of adding a second or alternative face to Face ID with iOS 12.2 and up. While most Android devices have the option to add up to 5 different face IDs, Apple has restricted it to 2. And that too is called “SECONDARY” and limited, unlike Android where all 5 IDs have equal features and authority.

This is how you can make it work on either your iPhone or iPad using Face ID.

How do you set up an alternative appearance or even an additional person?

  • Visit the Settings for the iPhone or iPad using Face ID.

  • Find Face ID & Passcode.
  • Input your existing passcode.
  • Set up an Alternate Appearance.

Follow the instructions on the screen to set up Face ID on behalf of the individual, or a significantly different version of yourself that you and your iPhone may see frequently. This can include the use of facial masks, makeup that is heavy, glasses, sunglasses, hats, and so on.

It is important to note that you only have the ability to save one main facial ID and one alternate face. Therefore, if you would like to change your secondary ID, you will need to reset your Face ID.

How do you set up an alternative fingerprint?

  • Visit the Settings for the iPhone or iPad.

  • Find Fingerprint & Passcode.
  • Input your existing passcode.
  • Set up an Alternate fingerprint.

Follow the instructions on the screen to set up a Fingerprint on behalf of the individual, or a significantly different version of yourself that you and your iPhone may see frequently.

Winding-up

A few things should be kept in mind while choosing an alternate Fingerprint/ Face ID.

  • Choose a different face.
  • Do not use any face mask or cloth while registering the new Face ID.
  • For alternate fingerprint verification, make sure the new fingerprint does not have any wear and tear.
  • We suggest the use of lesser common fingers like the ring or little finger.
  • Do not use the thumb.

And just like that, you can set up an alternative Fingerprint/ Face ID for your device by following these simple instructions.
