The story of Modern Warfare takes place in the year 2011 when a militant tyrant assassinated the President of an unidentified country in the Middle East, and an ultranationalist movement sparked a civil war in Russia. The problems are seen from a U.S. point of view. A British SAS commando and Force Reconnaissance Marine are deployed in different places, such as the United Kingdom, the Middle East, Azerbaijan, Russia, and Ukraine. There are different game modes in the multiplayer portion of the game, and there is a leveling system that allows the player to gain extra weapons, weapon accessories, and camouflage schemes as they progress.

Campaign Mode
During a single-player game, the player assumes the role of different characters. The role of the characters in the story takes place concurrently and overlaps with the events in the game. As such, between missions, the viewpoint of the player switches from one character to another. Every mission has several goals; with the heads-up display, the player is led to each target, which marks its direction and distance. In a few goals, the player needs to arrive at a checkpoint.
In contrast, other goals require the player to kill enemies at a specified spot, stand on their ground to protect an objective, or impose explosive charges on an enemy facility. A special epilogue mission is unlocked for play after finishing the campaign. The mission itself has little bearing on the plot of the campaign and focuses on a SAS squad battling terrorists who stole an aircraft and took a VIP hostage. The key campaign contains 30 collectible pieces of intel that award the game to the player.
Multiplayer Mode
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has multiplayer modes on different maps that are team-based and deathmatch-based. Each mode has an objective that needs unique tactics to be completed. When three, five, and seven enemy killstreaks are accomplished, players can call in UAV surveillance scans, airstrikes, and attack helicopters. A game ends when either a team or a player has reached a predefined number of points, or the allocated period expires, in which case the team or player with the most points ends. If the scores are equal when the time passes, Sudden Death mode is triggered in which there is no re-spawning, and the winners are the team who either has the last man standing, or hits the target first. If the player is in one of the two matches, then there is an overtime game in which the victory is awarded to the next team to win.
